FCAV 30th event staff carers board members on steps of Govt House

The FCAV was honoured to accept an invitation from The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and Mr Anthony Howard AM QC., to host foster carers, FCAV members and foster care allies, including the Minister for Child Protection and Carers - Anthony Carbines MP, Commissioner for Children & Young People, Liana Buchanan, Victorian Council of Social Service CEO Emma King, Anglicare Victoria CEO, Paul McDonald and The Honourable Jennifer Coate AO, former Judge of the Family Court of Australia, Royal Commissioner and Officer of the Order of Australia, to mark this significant milestone for the organisation at Government house on Wednesday 23 March 2022.

The speeches and discussions held recognised the advocacy, as well as the dedicated care provided by volunteer foster carers over the years which has led to the FCAV becoming the comprehensive and professional support, training and information service it now provides to foster carers and the sector. Thanks went to those carers who continue to commit their energy towards improving the systems and supports around foster care that positively impact the lives of children and young people in care.

Thank you to the carers and past members who joined the Governor at Government House as guests of honour including former CEO Katie Hooper, Board members, Megan Sadlier & Sue Segar, foster carers and members Ama Hargreaves, Belinda Farleigh, Caroline Buchanan, Helen Falconer, Kerryn & Stephen Longmuir, Lindy Fergeus, Krissy Robinson, Natalie Pryor, Russell Bull and Chairperson of Grandparents Victoria, Helen Brown.

The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria:

“I know that the generosity of foster carers goes back further than 30 years but this is an important anniversary...”

“In my 40 years in law… many spent as a magistrate in the Children’s Court and a judge in the Family Court, I saw time-and-time again just how important it was to have people to step-up and step-in and look after children who were vulnerable.”

“I’ve realised how extraordinary the carers are, the generosity goes on and on, the selflessness involved in loving, caring for and nurturing these youngsters and then handing them back at some point.”

“I’m so grateful that the Foster Care Association looks after so many aspects, whether it’s training, advocacy or support and I can’t imagine that any of the foster carers here would say that they would be able to do it… as easily without that support – so on behalf of all Victorians I want to thank everyone past and present who is associated with foster care and the FCAV, above all the carers, but all those who have contributed.”

“I know that those of you who are here today represent many, many hundreds of other (carers) so you are the tip of a wonderful iceberg that makes our whole community stronger.”

President of the FCAV Board of Directors, Tori Smith:

"It is a measure of FCAV's success that we are a highly trusted organisation, by our government, foster care agencies and most importantly, our members who contact us daily for support."
