Alexandra Morey, a full-time professional, navigates life with her husband, Derek, and their two children, Darius (13) and Aurelia (10), with a heart for fostering. As a couple, they began their journey as foster carers in 2020, inspired by Alexandra's family history in fostering and adoption. This experience has brought seven children, from 18 months to 9 years old, into their lives for short-term care, creating many unforgettable memories.
“Fostering isn’t just about providing a roof; it’s about creating a place to belong,” Alexandra shares. This mindset has been a guiding principle in their approach to care, with each child bringing a fresh dynamic to their family. One of the most rewarding aspects has been watching their own children grow through the experience. “It’s fascinating to see Darius and Aurelia step up,” she says. “They’ve learned to help around the house, to share their space, and they’ve built a sense of responsibility that’s only strengthened our family.”
In fostering, Alexandra and Derek have been touched by the resilience of the children who come to stay. “Kids are so quick to adapt. It doesn’t take long for them to feel comfortable, knowing where the light switches are and finding their favourite spot on the couch,” Alexandra says. “They’re incredibly resilient, and they form unique connections with each of us, often choosing a different ‘go-to’ person for cuddles, questions, or snacks.”
For those considering fostering, Alexandra offers practical advice: “Choose an agency that suits you—they’ll be your main support, and a good fit means you’ll feel backed up whenever you need it.”
The agency not only connects carers with placements but also offers guidance on finding kids who match their availability and comfort levels. Flexibility, patience, and a willingness to create a safe environment are all essential, she notes. “It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being present and giving kids positive experiences.”
Despite the inevitable challenges, Alexandra finds support in Derek’s steady, pragmatic mindset: “He always says, ‘Just accept it, and we’ll figure out the details later.’ It’s become our motto, and it’s true—everything always works out.” This adaptability has been key in handling new situations and the complexities of fostering, especially in moments when they face an urgent call for a placement.
There’s a hope for improvement in the foster care system, particularly in areas such as transparency and logistical support. Alexandra explains, “More structured communication would make a big difference. Sometimes, information about a child’s health or emergency contacts is written on the back of a crumpled note, which isn’t ideal.” She’s also found the delineation of care zones across Victoria to be frustrating. “We’re in the Southeastern Suburbs, and we’d love to help kids nearby, but zoning restrictions often mean placements are from further away, like Gippsland or the Yarra Valley.”
Despite the system’s gaps, Alexandra and Derek remain committed to fostering, finding motivation in the joy these kids bring to their lives. “Watching them experience something new—especially with our own kids joining in—makes every effort worthwhile.”
