Foster carers are insured for household property damage and personal accidents incurred while volunteering by the Victorian Managed Insurance Agency (VMIA).
VMIA is a government insurance authority and its functions include acting as an insurer for, or providing insurance services to, government departments and community service organisations.
Further information about VMIA household and personal accident insurance policies can be accessed at:
Covers the property of volunteer caregivers, in the event it is damaged by people in their care.
Covers volunteers whilst performing their duty, for accidental bodily injury that results in:
loss of life,
permanent, or
temporary disablement.
Foster carer claims should be lodged by their Agency as a preference, however carers can also lodge claims directly via the VMIA portal at https://www.vmia.vic.gov.au/claim/make-a-claim. Carers do not need to use their household insurance first to make a claim and are encouraged to discuss the VMIA referral and claim process with their Agency and/or VMIA.
*All claims lodged will be assessed by VMIA as per the terms, conditions and exclusions of the relevant policy.
