The Foster Care Association of Victoria (FCAV) extends heartfelt congratulations to Liana Buchanan on her appointment as Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).
Liana leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of advocacy, leadership, and meaningful change in the child and youth welfare sector. As Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People, she has been a tireless champion for the voices of young Victorians, ensuring their experiences and needs are heard at the highest levels. During her leadership, the Commission has amplified the voices of children and young people, leading youth forums, engaging directly with young people and carers, and never shying away from the critical conversations that drive reform. We thank Liana for her dedication to celebrating, uplifting, and advocating for a safe, recognised, and supported childhood for all young people in Victoria.
Liana’s generosity was evident when she joined FCAV’s first-ever online Carer Celebration in 2020, sharing valuable insights from the In Our Words inquiry. This landmark inquiry placed young people's lived experiences at the centre, shaping crucial recommendations to improve care and support systems.
Liana has continued to generously share her expertise with the FCAV community, including presenting key findings from the Let Us Learn report at the 2024 Foster Care Week Carer Celebration event. Her leadership has also supported advocacy for an increase in the care allowance to better recognise and sustain foster carers and the children they support.
Beyond this, Liana has worked tirelessly to push for greater support for children who have experienced family violence, including those in foster care. Her influence has profoundly impacted the lives of children, carers, and families across Victoria.
While we celebrate Liana’s achievements, we also acknowledge her unwavering focus on the work still to be done. She has always remained committed to the ongoing progress needed to protect and uphold the rights, wellbeing, and safety of children and young people.
On behalf of Victoria’s foster carers and the FCAV, we thank Liana for her unwavering dedication and commitment. We wish her every success in her new role and look forward to seeing her continue to make a difference.
